A Houston businessman named George Ballas, founder of the Weed Eater company, invented the string trimmer in 1972. After watching spinning bristle brushes at a car wash, Ballas took a discarded popcorn can, punched holes in the side and fed monofilament fishing line out of the holes. Mounted in place of the blade on his lawn edger, his new string trimmer head managed to cut grass without damaging tree roots.
